Here we see an example of the U.P. power. Locomotive number8805 is in Las Vegas, Nevada preparing for work at Boulder Dam.This is a three cylinder locomotive. The outside cylinders measured 25" by 28", theinside cylinders were 25" by 30". The pistons drove 63" drivers with 200 psi boilerpressure developing 78,000 lbs of tractive effort. This Alco, built in 1926,weighs in (without tender) at 404,000 lbs.
Train number 824, "The Mary Pickford" of the Southern Pacific Railroad is leavingTaylor Yards in Los Angeles California. Southern Pacific type number 5042 is on the point of this fast freight. An oil burner, Alco equipped this locomotive with a large Vanderbilt Tender, power reverse, and a frontend throttle. Like the U.P. power, these were three cylinder locomotives.
